Untitled
Date/ 2001
Artist(Credit Line)/ Nam June Paik
Classification/ Drawing
Dimensions / 35.5×43.2cm

The lower-right corner of this drawing shows ‘George Washington Bridge’ or ‘the Hudson River’ from which we can presume that this drawing depicts New Jersey and its landmarks such as Freedom Tower and AT&T. The Bell Labs affiliated to AT&T that ran a residency program for avant-garde artists in the 1960s is one of the important organizations for Nam June Paik. He took part in the Fortran workshop there in 1966, and as a resident artist in 1967 researched into different possibilities of the computer using the lab’s facilities. The distance between New York’s Soho where Paik lived and the outskirts of New Jersey was not easy to travel, but it was said that Paik came to work in the lab three to four days a week. Two drawings of New Jersey all feature similar female nudes having a distinctive hairstyle, perhaps a specific woman in mind.
