[Open Call] Artists’ Residency Exchange Programme between Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT), United Kingdom and Nam June Paik Art Center (NJPAC), South Korea
Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) and Nam June Paik Art Center (NJPAC) are participating in the Artists’ Residency Programme for UK/Korea 2017-2018 with the theme ‘Creative Future’. Eight UK visual arts institutions will partner with eight South Korean institutions to develop and deliver an Artists’ Residency Programme for emerging artists based in the United Kingdom and South Korea. FACT and NJPAC-two leading, international media arts centres- have partnered to host two artists, one from each of their respective countries, within the context of this residency exchange programme. The selected artists will have the chance to conduct research and production, as well as become embedded in the everyday of the organisations, including participation in various programmes such as open studios, artist talks, screenings and performances. This two month residency period will develop the artist’s’ practice, as well as expanding and deepening their international contacts, through the diverse networks of host organisations included in this programme. FACT and NJPAC have developed a partnership within this context. FACT is supported using public funding by Arts Council England, and Liverpool City Council. NJPAC is supported by Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation and Arts Council Korea.

About the UK/Korea Cultural Season
Arts Council England is co-investing £1.4 million in international collaboration and exchange with Arts Council Korea. FACT and NJPAC are delighted to be among the 21 performing and visual arts projects in England and South Korea to receive awards from the fund. The Arts Council England–Arts Council Korea co-investment sits alongside and complements the UK/Korea 2017–18 season, jointly organised by the British Council and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea.

About the Residency Exchange Network
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art is leading a consortium of English organisations including Castlefield Gallery, FACT, Grizedale Arts, New Art Exchange, Site Gallery, Spike Island and Wysing Arts Centre that are working with Korean partners (below) and artists to develop an Artists’ Residency Exchange Programme for emerging artists based in the United Kingdom and South Korea. The Korean partners participating in the programme are: The Nam June Paik Art Center, Hongti Art Center, Barim, Arumjigi Culture Keepers Foundation and the Mokin Museum, Artspace Boan1942, Creative Plan-B, Seoul Art Space Geumcheon and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA).

1. Open Call Outline
1) Admission: 1 Korean / 1 British individual or collective respectively
2) Media: Moving image, New media, Design, Games, Sound and Performance
3) Themes: Art and creative technology, Internet identity politics, The Posthuman, Gamification, Radical games, Social change
4) Eligibility: – British artist who is eligible to stay in South Korea for two months
– Korean artist who is eligible to stay in the United Kingdom for two months
5) Residency Period: 8 consecutive weeks between 30th October, 2017 – 28th February, 2018

3. Application Materials
1) Korean & English Applications (Please use required format)
– Personal Information, Short Biography, Artist Statement
– Illustrative representative works (maximum of 5)
– Desired residency period (8 consecutive weeks)
– Residency monthly proposal (including any related public programmes etc)
2) Signed usage agreement for personal information collection (Attached document)
3) Portfolio
– CV (Korean & English each, Please do not exceed 2 pages)
– Digital Image files: 10 JPEG images max.
– Video / Audio clips: Vimeo links should include any passwords

Please note: Submissions should be primarily made in English. Korean applicants are welcome to apply in Korean as long as they also include an English version of the Application.
4. Evaluation Process
1) Evaluation Schedule
– 1st Application Review (Organisational Juries): Late September, 2017
– 2nd Application Review (International Partner Juries): Middle October, 2017
2) Admission Announcement: Middle October, 2017
– Admitted applicants will be notified individually before the announcement is posted on the websites of FACT and NJPAC.
– The above timetable is subject to change according to the schedule of the FACT and NJPAC.
5. Resources and Obligations
1) Resources
– Artists fee/Honorarium: £2,000 GBP
– Subsistence/Materials: £2,000 GBP
– Accommodation: Room close to each institution
– Round-trip flight
– Residency space: UK artist will use a space in NJPAC and Korean artist will use FACTLab in FACT.
– Curatorial, technical and marketing support
2) Obligations
– The residency space should be inhabited by the artist for at least 4 days per week. If the artist has to leave the residency for a longer period of time, s/he should notify and discuss in advance with the staff of NJPAC or FACT.
– Public programmes related to the residency programme should be held by the artist during the period.
– The artist should follow the regulations of the residency.
– The residency space should be restored to its original state after the termination of the programme.

※ Please note, FACT is launching a major exhibition on 22nd March 2018 called States of Play, concerned with the more political side of video games and gaming. Appropriate artistic or design projects may be considered for inclusion within this exhibition or its accompanying programme of events.
6. Restrictions
1) If the artist falls under any of the following conditions, acceptance to the residency may be cancelled.
– If the artist has deliberately presented false information or misinformed the Committee.
– If the artist is accepted to, or will begin, another residency program during the programme.
– If the artist fails to maintain his/her project at the residency due to personal reasons.
2) Please note that FACT or NJPAC is not responsible for visa arrangement and expenses.
