Since it was founded in 2008, Nam June Paik Art Center has made its best endeavors to explore the work of Nam June Paik and introduce his artistic vision to the public, under the motto of ‘the house where the spirit of Nam June Paik lives on.’
This year marks the 12th anniversary of the death of Nam June Paik. 2018 is the time for us to remember and put into practice his artistic dreams and ideals more than ever.
Social changes driven by digital revolution have brought us utopian fantasies about the upcoming future. Contrary to expectations, however, we are confronted with the crisis caused by negative side effects of globalization, such as regional disparities, inequality between classes, religious and cultural conflicts as well as expansions of nationalism and national egoism. Furthermore, the gap between technological innovation, including artificial intelligence(AI), bitcoin, the fourth industrial revolution, and slow evolution of humans increases the uncertainty about the future and creates the fear of technological environments.
Nam June Paik consistently emphasized and attempted to realize the future of coexistence based on horizontal sharing of all things in the world through art. He offered an optimistic vision for the future in pursuit of horizontal exchanges among different regions, cultures, races and religions as well as integration of humans, machines and nature.
We will be able to move forward into a brighter future out of the age of uncertainty, when his ideals of art are realized, carrying on in the heart of everyone in the world. In commemoration of the 12th anniversary of the death of Nam June Paik, we remember and honor him, recalling the significance of his artistic ideal and spirit to us.

On January 29, 2018, the Nam June Paik Art Center holds a special online event to remember and honor Nam June Paik, commemorating the 12th anniversary of his death. The website titled will be launched on January 29 at 12:00 a.m. Visitors of the website can answer questions about Nam June Paik and his art world, thereby sharing memories of Nam June Paik, who devoted his life to creative and innovative experiments as the founder of video art. Those answering all the questions are invited to write a message for the deceased in the ‘special online space in memory of Nam June Paik.’ Gifts will be given to participants who left a message through a lottery later.
