Common Front, Affectively Artist Talk, Performance
Nam June Paik Art Center holds artist talks and performances of the 2018 special exhibition Common Front, Affectively. This exhibition is particularly driven by the fact that social media become part of everyday life, and the arena of public discussion is situated to link online and offline, which make social emotions to take on a new form, and sensorial perceptions to follow a new course. Common Front, Affectively is to show different standpoints of contemporary art about the propagation of emotion and sensation. These events will provide you an opportunity to help more understanding of exhibition and it participating works.

Everyday Practice, Katarina Popović

In Artist Talk III, design-based artists of this exhibition will give a talk about graphic design as social statements and practices. You will find the broadened horizons of design from two-dimensional printed media to spatial installations, interdisciplinary research and performance stages by these artists who lay emphasis on collaborative approach to design.

Everyday Practice (EP) is a graphic design studio founded by Joonho Kwon who studied communication design in the Royal College of Art, and Kyung-chul Kim and Eojn Kim who worked together with non-profit organizations in Korea. EP carries out a series of self-initiated projects embodied with social messages as well as collaborative projects with different non-profit organizations and cultural institutions. Their own projects include None of My Business (Korean Society of Typography, 2013), You and Me Interconnected (2014), Nobody Deserves a Death Simply Because They Took Such a Ship (2014), Life in Seoul (Alliance Graphique Internationale Special Project, 2016), Why Do I Resent Only Small Things (World Script Symposia, 2016), NIS.XXX (2016). They held a solo exhibition Means of Movement in 2017.

Katarina Popović (1974, Belgrade, Serbia) works in fields of visual and performing arts, and graphic design in culture and activism. Her multidisciplinary practice includes: re-interpretation, re-examination and expansion of the basic syntax of printed media, process design, interdisciplinary projects (Edition: 1-6; Straitjackets 1&2), collective authorship (Antijargon, Polygon). Member of editorial collective of TkH (Walking Theory) platform for contemporary art and theory (2012-2017) and graphic designer of TkH Journal for Performing Arts Theory (2007-2017). She collaborates and participates in research and working processes with many authors and initiatives on various artistic, activistic and performance art projects (Bojan Djordjev, Siniša Ilić, Tomi Janežić, Nicoline Van Harskamp, Nomad Dance Academy, Per.Art, Station Service for contemporary dance, Reconstruction – Women’s fund, Stealth). In 2014 Popović received 10th Grifon Award for best poster design.

The Discreet Charm of Marxism


Nam June Paik Art Center invites you to the performance The Discreet Charm of Marxism of the Common Front, Affectively by participating artist Bojan Djordjev. The Discreet Charm of Marxism is a 6-course discussion performance. The title is borrowed from Luis Bunuel’s film The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Hosted by the artist, and the invited audiences read and discuss together Marxist texts on class struggle and revolution and their present-day significances. Produced by Serbian theater-maker Djordjev in collaboration with graphic designer Popovi? and visual artist Ili?, this work was premiered in Amsterdam in 2013, and was subsequently staged in Geneva, Belgrade, Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon and Shanghai.
