Penguin that goes to the mountain (performance)
Period
2010.06.25(Fri)
Venue
Nam June Paik Art Center 2F
Artist
Vaemo, Robbie Avenaim

With the Penguin that goes to the mountain exhibition the Nam June Paik Art Center Proposes imagining alternative ways to look at artistic production. Taking the title from a scene in Werner Herzog’s Encounters at the end of the world where a penguin heads toward an unknown mountain leaving the colony behind, this exhibition commemorates the promise inherent to artistic production that, not yet fully assimilated into established artistic discourse, resonates with Nam June Paik’s ability to challenge new territories and combine many often unrelated genres.

As part of this exhibition the Nam June Paik Art Center will present two sound performances on Friday, June 25th at 5pm, The first performance consists of Vaemo’s presentation of his two pieces Blue Spot-light and Don’t imitate. During the performance Vaemo builds several structures from humble materials that are present in our daily lives. The artist hopes to disturb the audience’s perspectives on knowledge and authority through the way he performs with these structures and with sound.

To follow, Australian sound artist Robbie Avenaim will present two sound improvisation pieces. Avenaim is a founder and co-organizer of the What Is Music Festival, Australia’s largest annual showcase of experimental music established in 1994.Over the pas 25 years Robbie has combined traditional and extended techniques with the physical modification of the Drums. These modifications have included extending the use of the instrument’s various motorized percussive and amplification mechanisms. This practice has opened the scope for both composing and performing. As a musician, composer, instrument builder, the design of new instruments is an integral part of Avenaim’s compositional process. Avenaim will be joined by Seoul based sound artist Chulki Hong for his second performance.
