Charlotte Moorman’s Sky Kiss originally began with a collaboration with Jim McWilliams, but from the 1980s onwards, Otto Piene joined as an organizer. Piene already had expertise in balloon technology from his experience of levitating a performer with hot-air balloons for Boston WGBH’s program The Medium Is the Medium in 1968. Piene founded Zero Group in the late 1950s, and came up with the concept of ‘sky art,’ a kind of environmental art, and produced such works as Olympic Rainbow shown at the closing ceremony of the 1972 Olympic Games in München, by filling different-colored tubes with helium and shining light on them in the sky. Piene brought Moorman to the Sky Art Conference as part of Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria in 1982 to perform Sky Kiss.
